Objective: students will apply their prior knowledge of of adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying fractions by the end of class in preparation for their assessment. Learning Targets: - the student can determine the steps needed to solve a math problem involving the use of fractions and mixed numbers. - the student will be able to understand how to interpret word problems that involve fractions and mixed numbers. - the student will be able to apply the steps needed to solve these mathematical problems. Anticipatory Set: teacher will display the practice problems of division and multiplication on the board. They will then choose a popsicle stick with a student's name and ask them to explain the process of solving the problem. this will allow the student to understand the process of multiplying and dividing fractions. (10 min.) The Lesson: The teacher will display 2 problems on the board; one subtraction one addition; for students to solve as groups with white boards. Based on the student's answers the teacher will go over the problem or move on to the next. (6 min.) The teacher will display 2 sets of problems on the board; two multiplication and two division, for students to do as done in the first paragraph. Based on the outcome(s) the teacher will go over or move on from the problem. It is advised to go over the problems anyway, for the students who may not understand and will not mention their struggle. Assessment: Teacher will supply students a half sheet that involves solving a word problem independently involving the division of fractions. after, the teacher will review the problem with the students and review the process once more. (5-10 min.) Closure: Briefly, the teacher will go over all the processes of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with students. (5 min.) |
